Kensington Home Technology has been featured in The Sunday Times, as their Tech Consultant under the banner 'Ask the Experts':

I am building a new basement under my property to create a large open plan space incorporating kitchen, dining and entertaining space. I want to control and dim all the lights from multiple points which I don’t think I can do using rotary dimmers. What would you advise?

You are right in saying that you can’t dim a lighting circuit from multiple switch locations using rotary dimmers. To control multiple lighting circuits in a room the best solution is to install a digital dimming system, which will allow you to control the dimming on all circuits to create a series of moods depending on what you are doing. Furthermore the digital dimming systems will allow you to dim from multiple locations around your basement.

There a number of companies that make digital dimming systems but have a look at iLux dimmers from Crestron (0845 873 8787 www.crestron.co.uk) and Grafikeye dimmers from Lutron (020 7702 0657 www.lutron.com), both of which will allow you to control up to six circuits of lighting from a single control. The dimmers can either by installed in the room or else hidden away and controlled using slave faceplates. The slave faceplates come in a range of styles and finishes to match most decors. Prices for the dimmers start at about £500 and the additional slave faceplates start at about £100 each.

The dimmers can also be used to control electric blinds and curtains from the same faceplates, either manually or automatically based around either light levels or clock timings.

For extra convenience both the Crestron and Lutron products can either be controlled using handheld remotes or integrated into a whole house automation system, allowing you to integrate the lighting with AV, security and building services for example.

The manufacturers will be able to provide you with details of qualified companies in your area who are able to commission and install these products.
